If you've spent any time shopping for handmade soap, you've probably seen the terms "hot process" and "cold process" thrown around — and you might be wondering if it actually matters which one you buy, or if it's just soapmaking jargon. Here's the honest, straightforward breakdown.

The Basic Difference

Both methods start the same way: mixing oils with lye to create a chemical reaction called saponification, which is what actually turns oil into soap. Where they differ is in how that reaction happens.

Cold process soap is mixed at room temperature and then left alone. The saponification reaction happens slowly and gradually over the following days, and the bar then needs to cure for 4-6 weeks before it's ready to use. That curing time allows excess moisture to evaporate out of the bar, which is what makes it hard, long-lasting, and ready for the shelf. Cold process is a more modern method, made practical by precise digital scales, thermometers, and temperature control — tools that let soap makers carefully manage a slow reaction.

Hot process soap speeds up that same chemical reaction by applying direct heat during the mixing process, essentially "cooking" the soap right in the pot until saponification is mostly complete before it's ever poured into a mold. This is the older of the two methods, and it's much closer to how soap has actually been made throughout history — including back in the medieval era, our favorite point of reference. Soap makers back then didn't have digital thermometers, precise scales, or the luxury of waiting weeks for a slow reaction to finish on its own. They had a kettle, a fire, and generations of hands-on knowledge. Hot process is our nod to that same tradition — soap made the way it actually used to be made, not the way modern convenience has reshaped it.

Why We Make Our Soap This Way

At Knights Supply Co., we exclusively use hot process. Part of it is practical — it gives our bars that rustic, textured look, and it means bars are ready sooner than a 4-6 week cold process cure would allow. But honestly, the bigger reason is that it fits who we are as a brand.

We build everything around knights, chivalry, and craftsmanship rooted in the medieval world — so it only makes sense that our soapmaking method has real roots in that same era too. No shortcuts, no modern conveniences quietly doing the hard work for us. Just heat, real ingredients, and hands-on attention, made the way it's been done for hundreds of years, not the way a machine or a modern shortcut would prefer.

Does That Actually Make It Better?

Not necessarily, at least not in a technical sense. Both hot process and cold process produce genuine, quality, real soap — the differences mostly come down to appearance, texture, and timeline, not which one is "healthier" or more effective on skin. A well-made bar is a well-made bar, regardless of which centuries-old method got it there.

For us, though, hot process isn't just a technique — it's part of the story we're telling with every bar. Each one is a small callback to a craft that's been around a lot longer than we have, made the way a soap maker in the 14th century might recognize, even if the scents on our shelf definitely weren't around back then.
